Frequently asked questions.
Everything you need to know about Riffed, the collaborative music platform for musicians.
Getting started
What is Riffed?+
Riffed is a social music platform where musicians collaborate in real time. You record a short loop (a riff, a beat, a vocal hook) and other musicians layer their own parts on top of it. Every contribution is credited, and the result grows into a branching "tree" of music that anyone can explore.
Think of it as the creative part of a recording session, minus the studio, minus the scheduling, and open to musicians anywhere in the world.
Do I need any special equipment?+
Just your phone. Riffed is built to sound great with the microphone you already have. The app includes a built-in metronome, BPM detection, and audio processing, with no external gear, DAW, or plugins required.
That said, plugging in a pair of earbuds or a simple audio interface will improve your recording quality if you want to go further.
How do I get access to Riffed?+
Riffed is publicly available on iOS — download it now from the App Store. Android is on the way and launching soon.
Is Riffed free to use?+
Yes. Recording, layering, and collaborating are free. We may add optional paid features down the line, but the core creative experience of making music together stays free.
Recording & layers
How long can a riff be?+
While there is no hard cap on length, Riffs are short by design: typically a few seconds up to around a minute. Long enough to lay down an idea, short enough to keep the collaboration moving.
Can I record video, or just audio?+
Currently you must use a video to upload, however any image can be used if a user chooses to upload their own video file.
What exactly is a "layer"?+
A layer is your part added on top of someone else's riff: a bassline under their guitar, a harmony over their vocal. Layers stack up, and every one who contributes is credited.
Is there a metronome and BPM control?+
Yes. A metronome and BPM tools are built into the recorder so your take lines up with the original. No external gear or DAW needed.
Can I import audio I already recorded?+
You can pull a clip in from your library when you create a riff, so work you captured elsewhere can join the conversation.
Collaboration
How do I layer on someone else's riff?+
Find a riff you like, tap to add a layer, and record your part in time with it. When you publish, the original creator gets notified and your layer joins their tree.
Who gets credit when a track grows?+
Everyone. Each contributor in the tree is attributed, so as a riff grows into a full track, the credit is shared across all the musicians who built it.
Can I control who layers on my riffs?+
When making a new post you can control who can view the post, such as anyone, just your friends or save it as a personal draft, however anyone who can view your riff can layer on it.
Can I collaborate privately with a group?+
Groups let you share riffs and chat with a closed set of musicians, so you can build something together before (or instead of) making it public.
Can I message other musicians?+
Yes. Direct messages and group chats are built in, so you can plan a collab or just talk shop.
Discovery & feed
How does the feed work?+
The feed is a vertical scroll of originals, layers and riffs, no lip-syncs, just real playing. Riffs that get layered and liked the most rise to the top.
How do I find people to collaborate with?+
Browse by instrument, genre, and vibe, explore trending riffs, or discover musicians near you. Follow the ones whose sound you want more of.
What's the "tree"?+
When people layer on a riff, and others layer on those, the result branches into a tree, a visual map of how one idea grew into a collaborative track.
Account & privacy
How is my data handled?+
We keep it minimal and never sell it. The full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Can I delete my account?+
Yes. You can permanently delete your account and its data from inside the app at any time.
How do I report or block someone?+
Every profile and post has report and block options. We review reports of objectionable content and act on them quickly, typically within 24 hours.
Does Riffed use my location?+
Only if you allow it, and only approximately, to surface musicians near you and tag where a riff was made. You can turn it off any time in Settings.
Beta & availability
Is Riffed available now?+
Yes. Riffed is live on iOS. Download it from the App Store and start riffing.
When is Android coming?+
Android is in active development and launching soon. Join the list on our home page to hear the moment it goes live.
How do I send feedback or report a bug?+
Open Settings → Send feedback in the app. It's an early build and every note gets read: bug reports, ideas, and confusion all welcome.
Still have a question? We're a small team and we read everything.
